I had done a few drawings of Magnolia in a sailor-type outfit, and then I came across this adorable sailor dress. The button is an anchor, how cute is that?

I don’t remember exactly when I drew the old picture. I think I was in middle school, so at least a good 12-13 years ago. I’m pretty sure it was one of the first anime-style drawings I did. And I think I still have it tucked away in a box or binder somewhere.
Basically my teachers have been trying to get me to quit with the anime for over a decade. But I’m stubborn so I ignored ‘em.
That’s not to say that I never took any figure drawing classes or ignored learning and observing from life. Those studies played a HUGE part in helping me get to where I am now, and I absolutely recommend them to anyone who’s considering a career in art.
Learn the rules before you break them, and all that.
But I’m never going to stop drawing in the style that got me hooked on art and comics and animation in the first place.
This is the art for the inside front cover of the digital Magnolia vs Kitten book.
Last spring during my final year of college I made a pitch / concept booklet for an animation class. I’m working on getting it assembled in inDesign so I can put it on Gumroad as a pay-what-you-want PDF.
This looks kind of neat, but probably won’t be the final cover.
And done!
